This happened when I was in my early 20s.
I was in a live in relationship and used to stay in an independent house with no interaction with neighbours to avoid unwanted questions.
It was summer vacation in my Mom's school(she is a teacher), and she decided to pay me a visit. As it was a planned visit, I had enough time to find a temporary PG for my girlfriend and move her there for the duration Mom was staying with me.
Things were going well, until one day I heard her talking to the maid in the kitchen.
I was in the hall watching TV,but I could hear the conversation.
Mom asked her ' yeah hamesha ghar aisa ganda karke rakhta hai kya?
("Does he keep the house dirty like this all the time")
The maid answered 'nahi, madam hoti hai toh ghar saaf rehta hai, nahi toh yeah toh kuch bhi theek se nahi rakhte.'
(No, the house is clean when madam is here, otherwise this guy does not keep anything properly)
Mom asked 'kaun madam'
(Who madam??)
I just heard this and rushed to the kitchen, and there the maid was just stuck without an answer.
I immediately tried to save the day and said to the maid 'aap kuch bhi mat bolo, mummy nahi hoti hai,tab bhi mein saaf safai rakhta hoon thoda bahut.'
(Just dont say rubbish. Even when Mom is not here, I do keep the house clean)
I thought Mom bought it and was happy.
The next day while helping me change the sheets , Mom said 'I hope you share the rent too and not just the bed, this kind of lifestyle is too much for you alone.'
I just grinned for sometime and let it pass. Luckily Mom never asked any more questions about her.
